2025 FISHING CENSUS

This will be our sixth annual survey. In 2024 66 DVFF’rs reported nearly 1,200 days on the water in 23 states and 15 foreign countries. Send me your data and attend the December Open House to view the Memorable Catches retrospective. I also want a photo of your favorite catch this year and a brief story. You’ll be able to see yourself in the show and find out what I say about you. So far, I have 44 individuals submitting over 100 photos. I’m looking for at least 75 members contributing. Don’t be left out.

Send via email (alanchristian87@gmail.com), the following: (1) Number of Days Fished, (2), Number of Days Out of State, (3) Favorite California Fishery and (4) Locations Out of State.

DVFF Open House
Presentation: Memorable Catches 2025, Presented by Alan Christian

Alan Christian 2025This is the sixth year that we will view a retrospective of member’s catches and hear the inside scoop from Alan Christian. From Slovenia to South Africa to Australia, DVFF’rs have plied world waters in search of adventure and the Big One that more often resides in our memory and never is shared or even netted. We will highlight some of our most popular outings, display ‘First Fish’ and ‘Trophy’ catches, plus relive family moments. Join us for the Open House, then settle in with your favorite beverage and buddy to celebrate a DVFF year on the water.

Alan Christian has been a club member for over 30 years and has been fly fishing since the early ‘60s. He’s a bug guy, the force behind the DVFF education program, our program chair and an advocate for the dry fly. As winner of the Fall River One Fly and two-time champion of the Five Rivers Challenge (with buddy Tom Seidman), an early advocate of the California Heritage Trout Challenge and now of the Western Native Trout Challenge, many consider Alan a ‘go to source’ of information on fishing.

A lifelong skier and racer, he leads a foundation supporting junior racers, adaptive sports and ski history. Western and national ski organizations have recognized Christian for his long-term contributions, and he proudly serves on the US Ski Hall of Fame voting committee. Bring up the subject and you are likely to hear that skiing and fly fishing are inseparable…wherever snow melts, trout can’t be far away. Attend a Fish Talk and you’re certain to get a dose of regional history that often includes native Americans, early pioneers and of course hatches.

A chemical engineering degree from the University of Colorado and early career training at Monsanto Co lead to the establishment of Christian Power Equipment Inc. and involvement in the building of many plants in California and the Northwest. Most companies who rely on steam or vacuum systems know the company and often consider us the experts. Though retired for several years, Alan is still contacted for advice and consultation most recently while standing in the middle of the Upper Sac.
