Description: This is a camping/fishing trip to a remote and special section of the Lower McCloud River. We will fish for native 8 to 25” trout on the lower section of the McCloud River below the McCloud Reservoir and above Shasta Lake. Most of the lower section is controlled by private clubs but there are three miles of public water accessible from the Ah-Di-Na Campground, where we will camp. An additional three miles is available in the Nature Conservancy part of the McCloud River (see below).
Fishing: This is technical fishing in a variety of water: slow pools, deep water, fast water and foaming rapids. DVFFers will need wading skills, long reach casts, high sticking skill, and ability to land big fish. You will need a wading staff and PFD.
Driving/Camping: The Ah Di Na Campground is 7 miles south of McCloud Reservoir on a rugged dirt road that requires trucks or SUVs with high clearance. The campground has 16 spaces with a fee of $10 per night. Facilities include drinking water, tables, fire rings, and toilets. Tent or RV camping is available. There are no reservations. Outing co-leaders will arrive earlier to secure our space.
Nature Conservancy McCloud Preserve: This is accessible by road and then trail, from Ah Di Na Campground. An additional three miles of water is available with catch and release and barbless hooks only. Outing co-leaders will request permits so that as many as possible can enjoy this additional stretch of water.
