Corona Bug Challenge BeerCalling all fly tiers!! Don’t just sit at your bench pumping out old, familiar patterns in anticipation of Opening Day. You know you won’t catch as many fish on the fly in your vice as your imagination suggests. But wait. DVFF has the perfect answer for your stay-at-home blues. Turn the coronavirus into your fishing partner. Let the bug help you catch more fish later this year. Here’s how.

Start by designing and tying a fly that you think merits the name “Corona Bug." Next, email a couple of pictures of your creation, a list of the tying materials and instructions to George Coughlin, along with the rationale for your fly. Following those two steps will automatically enter your design in the club’s contest. Entries can be a dry fly, nymph, streamer, wet fly or anything in between. You may enter as many patterns as you wish so long as George receives them by midnight, Tuesday, May 12.

An anonymous panel of sober, beer drinking, fly tiers will select the winning entries. Winners will be announced during the club meeting in May alongside a presentation of pictures of their designs. Besides bragging rights, the top winner will receive a half case of Corona Extra. The second-place design will earn a six pack of the same brew. Don’t worry about the rumor that Corona has stopped bottling its beer. We already have the prizes on ice.

The challenge begins immediately, so tiers “Start Your Vises!”
