This learning program is designed for women that have attended the DVFF Novice Program (or equivalent) and are looking to continue their fly fishing education.

Three-Part Program:

  1. Group casting lessons (2 @ 90 minutes each)
  2. Knots, gear and technique orientation for still water fishing (3hrs + practice at Heather Farms)
  3. Optional: Eagle Canyon Lake Outing** with on-site orientation by Confluence Outfitters, February 17, 2020 – students must complete the first 2 parts to be eligible to sign-up for the outing*.

Cost Estimate:

  • $40 Class fee: includes lessons, 6 flies, digital handouts, and list of recommend resources. Additional flies may be purchased at a cost of $15/box.
  • $135 - $175 for Eagle Canyon Lake (depending on the number of anglers)

Note: you will likely want to stay in Red Bluff the night before the outing. Carpooling and room sharing may be options to help reduce the travel costs.

Group Casting Lessons: Several lessons times will be available November 9th – February 8th. Location: Civic Park in downtown Walnut Creek, the Oakland Casting Ponds, and at GGACC.

Gear: The fish are big; the ideal rods are 5-7 weight with a matching intermediate (slow-sinking) line. Floating lines with indicators are also an option. Float tubes are a great way to fish more of the lake and there is an option to rent or borrow one for the outing. PDF’s will be required if you use a float tube

Technique: Fishing on still water is different than fishing a stream. Spending a few hours learning the gear and techniques to retrieve a fly, detect a strike and understand how water temperature and depth can influence your fishing will all help you catch more fish.

Coaches:

  • Casting: Cheryl O’Neill & Sarah Trenschel, both GGACC instructors and FFI Gold Skill Certified
  • Gear/technique/flies: Gerry Ng, Steve Spiller, John Berry, Steve Anderson, Jeffery Bowman, Larry Griffis, plus, (schedule dependent) Location The Gardens (Heather Farms) or Pleasant Hill Sr. Center
