Fly Fishing Proficiency

Multidisciplinary Series

(Incorporating the Dry Fly School)
This year DVFF will launch its first ever multidisciplinary series of seminars, outings and trips during January 2026. Well-rounded fly fishers don’t solely rely on one technique…they adapt to the conditions and have a quiver full of gear, flies and knowledge; plus, they target a wide variety of species and waters. The kick-off meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Jan, 24, 2026 at 1 p.m. at the Sycamore Homes Clubhouse, 635 Old Orchard Dr, Danville

Join us for a year of fly-fishing experiences. We’ll target trout, bass, carp, and saltwater species. We will employ the best methods, including euro, traditional nymphs, streamers, dry flies, and soft hackles, plus saltwater flies. Some fishing venues will be familiar, but others will take you to new waters. We’ll offer trout Spey clinics, deep water midging, Bay salt outings and even a trip to Baja if there’s interest.

Planned venues and strategies to be included:
Nymphing
Euro-Nymphing
Dry Fly Fishing
Streamer Fishing
Spey Casting
Stillwater
Saltwater
Carp
Mexico
Montana
Nevada
Eastern Sierra
Southern Sierra
Ca Heritage Trout Challenge
Western Native Trout Challenge
Tankara
Wet Fly Swinging

Tentative plans for venues include Baum Lake (February), Lake San Antonio (April), Montana (May), various destinations for the California and Western Heritage Trout challenges, and the Sacramento River (Trout Spey during June).

There is a $30 fee to attend this meeting to cover the room rental, refreshments, and materials.

Stillwater Academy

Comprehensive 21 zoom-based series recorded by Phil Rowley plus session recaps by Alan Christian and Wayne Hofer. Several Stillwater outings offered (some with guide led seminars) targeting productive California lakes. Watercraft expo offered in even years. Local warm water lake outing series with Fish Talks posted under Outings led by John Murphy.

Nymphing

A series of outings focused on short line nymphing techniques.  The cornerstone event is the Upper Sac Seminar in Dunsmuir in June.  This ‘coached’ outing includes bugs, fly selection, rigging, wading techniques and fishing in the Upper Sacramento River and often the Upper McCloud.  Camaraderie and socializing are encouraged, and group lodging is usually located at the River House in Dunsmuir.
