DVFF Donation Causes
The DVFF focuses on donating funds raised to support three areas: Youth, Education, and Conservation. Our primary source of funds is our annual auction, but we invite anyone to donate to causes they wish to support at any time.
Youth Outreach
The DVFF also supports local youth organizations, such coaching Scouts to earn their fly fishing merit badge and delivering trout eggs to local classroom through Trout in the Classroom.
Frank Harris (pictured) was a former DVFF president, one of the founders of the Bay Area Youth Fly Fishers (BAYFF) program, and instrumental in BAYFF’s success. In fulfillment of Frank’s vision, each year DVFF awards a scholarship in his name to a worthy recipient and sometimes several.
Our scholarship supports a week at The Fly Shop’s FishCamp™, located in the shadows of Mount Shasta on the shop’s Antelope Creek Ranch. At FishCamp™, boys and girls 10 to 15 years of age, learn the basic skills that could lead to a life-long enjoyment of fly fishing. “FishCampers” can catch fish on a fly, meet new friends, and experience the adventure of the outdoors. Lessons include:
- Fly Casting
- Fly Tying
- Basic Entomology and What Fish Eat
- Reading the Water
- Safe Wading Techniques
- Catch & Release of Rainbow & Brown Trout in the Ranch Stream and Lakes
- The Leave-No-Trace Philosophy
A donation to this fund helps youth to find joy and success in fly fishing while developing an understanding and appreciation for our natural environment.

Education
One of DVFF’s core tenants is Education. A meaningful part of our mission entails teaching members and others of the community about all aspects of fly fishing.
Gerry Ng (pictured) was passionate about teaching people about trout and fly fishing. Gerry's journey with DVFF began in 1987 and he quickly became a supporter of the DVFF’s efforts with Trout in Classroom. In the late 1990s, Gerry took the reins of the DVFF’s youth program. He was deeply involved in education efforts, sharing his knowledge of fly tying, and assisting with our Fly Fishing Fundamentals seminars. He earned the DVFF’s coveted Golden Trout Award in 1999, and was named Member of the Year in 2015, a title recognizing the impact he had on our broader community. Beyond DVFF, Gerry served as a dedicated board member of the Northern California Council of Fly Fishing International (NCCFFI).
Gerry specialized in tying fly patterns designed for stillwater trout, with his favorite stillwater fly being the balanced bruised leech. He generously shared his knowledge and was known to open his fly box and say, “Take as many as you need.”
Funds generated here support our effort to provide no- or low-cost education in fly fishing.
