Fly Tying Instruction

Beginning Fly Tying


The DVFF offers an eight-week Beginning Fly Tying class, typically during January and February. All students receive a course syllabus, and the materials needed for all patterns tied in the class. Fly tying kits are available for rent. Class size is limited to 10 students. Experienced fly tyers from the DVFF are present in each class to offer hands on coaching. Registration is done through the Pleasant Hill Park and Rec Department. The course will be advertised in Windknots articles and via email notification when registration opens. Intermediate Fly Tying Group (Under Development)


The DVFF Intermediate Fly Tying Group is intended to provide an opportunity for fly tyers in the club to enhance their fly tying skills and to socialize. This is not a beginning fly tying group. Participants should have mastered all fundamental tying skills and have a good knowledge of tying techniques and materials.

 

Meeting Frequency

  • Set at the discretion of the group. Ideally once a month.
  • Meeting dates and location will be arranged in advance based on input from the group.


Meeting Location

  • A member’s home or
  • A rented space, such as the Pleasant Hill Adult Center (with cost to be shared among participants).

 

Meeting Duration

  • Two to three hours.

Tying Leader

  • Rotating leader approach.
  • Each meeting will have an assigned leader.
  • Patterns to be tied will be selected by the leader or at the recommendation of the group, with concurrence from the leader.
  • The leader will provide a list of materials needs (and alternatives) in advance of the meeting.
  • Written tying instructions and YouTube videos to be provided at the discretion of the leader.
  • The leader will provide tying materials for the pattern for those who do not have the needed materials for the patterns to be tied.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials.
  • Demonstrate and assist members in tying patterns for the session.

Tying Participants

  • Bring their own tying equipment.
  • Bring any materials they may have for patterns to be tied.
  • Keep pace with the group.
  • Suggest patterns for future sessions.
  • Volunteer to lead a future session.
  • Provide input on meeting frequency and location.


Session Size

  • Limited to eight (8) members unless the classroom allows for a larger group.
