This class is designed to satisfy the needs of those club members who have yet to be adequately exposed to the basic knowledge and skills of fly fishing. All members of the family - spouse and children 15 years and older are welcome. It will provide the beginner, novice (even intermediate) with foundational knowledge of equipment, casting, basic entomology, fly selection, knots, reading water and finding trout in California. Casting and knot tying instruction will take place at a later date, with invites sent out to all students.

The class fee is $50.  If you are not a club member, you must first join the club and then return to this screen to register for the class.  The club membership fee is $45 and can be paid online here. The fee includes syllabus and membership for non-members. Family members (spouses and children under 21) are covered under one primary membership.

The Fall 2026 class dates are 9/28 and 9/30. Four homework assignments will precede the first Zoom session, during which students and coaches will be introduced to each other.  The seminar is limited to 10 students and includes at least eight coaches for the in-person training.

Pair this seminar with the coached outings and you will accelerate your learning curve, catch more fish and make new friends.  Many of the DVFF coaches and leaders started with this seminar and often credit the course with forming a solid foundation for their fly fishing expertise.
