Where: Heenan Lake is a small 130 ache lake at 7,130 feet that is well-known for its population of Lahonton cutthroat trout brood stock. The fishery at present is restricted to catch and release, with artificial lures only, between September 1– November 30. A valid CDFW fishing licenses is required. This outing’s primary goal is to teach and practice the “Art of Deep Midging”. Although, this is the primary teaching goal, normal Stillwater tactics are absolutely this applicable.

Portable toilets are available during Sept & Oct, not usually Nov.

Accommodations: Nearby camping and hotels are available. Also, there is the option of sleeping in your vehicle (literally) in the parking lot of the lake, no tents are allowed. This option is relatively new (last few years) and not a guarantee. Carson River Resort 530-694-2229 camping & cabins

Directions: Located in Alpine County, 7.4 miles southeast of Markleeville. From Markleeville, proceed southeast on Highway 89. The Wildlife Area entrance is on the right, off the south side of Highway 89, approximately two miles past the junction with Highway 4.

Fishing vessels: Pontoon Boats, float tubes, small trailered boats (row or electric motor only - no gas). There is a narrow, uneven 200’ boat ramp that has a 20% grade, with the ability to make a 3-point turn at the end. I suggest that you look it up on Google Earth.

Fly Rods, Fly Patterns, Fly lines & recommend equipment:
Your Typical Stillwater fly rods 5-7 weight fly rods, from 9-10’ are a good choice (6-7wt. is perfect). I recommend a minimum of 2 working rods when fishing, though 3 is better.

Fly lines will range from Floating to type 7. Having a variety of fly lines on separate spools is really ideal. Floating, Hover, intermediate, type 3, type 5 and type 7 are good choices.

I typically carry:
7 weight, 10’ rod for “deep midging” 10’- 30’ with a slip indicator setup.
7 weight, 10’ rod for indicator 10’ or less with a fixed indicator.
6 weight, 91/2’ rod for stripping.

Fly patterns that are said to work on Heenan Lake: Leeches, balanced leeches, buggers, prince nymphs, Damsels, Callibaetis, midges, and scuds.

At least 1 – 10-pound anchor (75’) is necessary for “deep midging”. A fish finder is highly recommended for locating fish and sandy bottoms! Personal Floatation Devices are also required.
