Diablo Valley Fly Fishing Club
Friendship | Conservation | Education
Welcome to the Diablo Valley Fly Fishing Club website. We are a group of men and women who share a common interest in the sport of fly fishing. The members of the DVFF help each other develop their skills and knowledge in the pursuit of this fascinating sport.

The DVFF serves its members through club activities and resources including a novice seminar, a Youth Fly Fishing program, skills seminars, fishing outings, guest speakers at regular meetings, an online forum, a DVD lending library, Facebook page, and an annual auction. The club sponsors a scholarship for research at the UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Center of Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture. The DVFF also supports a large Trout In the Classroom program and the local Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing-Martinez, CA program.

Anyone interested in fly fishing is eligible and welcome to become a member of the DVFF. For a little insight into our club, watch The DVFF's 50th Anniversary video.

The East Walker River,
Presented by Todd Pond

Speaker 2021 01 PondTodd is Grizzly Peak Fly Fishers' outings coordinator and a new DVFF member. He knows the East Walker and its wild fish, and will lead the DVFF's planned East Walker River Outing later in the year. The East Walker is a precious river in the Eastern Sierras. People from all over the world fish it every year. It’s a fishery where fly fishers leave a piece of their hearts. It’s well-known for its healthy population of wild trout. And, although this river is magical and beautiful, it is also very mysterious. The fish are on edge because it is so heavily fished and flows change constantly. Anglers often go home wandering if the river actually holds fish. Occasionally, the river gives up its secrets by rewarding an angler with a beautiful fish.

Determined to understand the East Walker River, Grizzly Peak Fly Fishers’ Todd Pond made several trips to the East Walker River during the past six years. His knowledge was gained by spending a lot of time exploring the river system and over those years, he learned the river well enough to consistently catch fish from the dam to the cattle fields in Nevada.

This presentation will cover the general area, the river, its history, camping, regulations, and fishing on the California and Nevada stretches of the East Walker River. He will break down the river into sections to provide an understanding of its different characteristics. Todd will also talk about the most productive ways to fish the river and cover productive flies. The most valuable part of this presentation will be the questions and answers.

Todd was introduced to the outdoors by his family when he was young. His earliest memories are camping, fishing, and playing in the mountains. Over the years, he has fished waters ranging from the mountain to ocean, but his most precious memories are fishing mountain streams and rivers for trout. He instantly fell in love with fly fishing, calling it holistic, interactive, and complex. Spending time in nature is sacred to Todd – the air, the foliage, the beauty, the wildlife, and the sounds of the river. “When I am in the river, I feel like I have become one with a nature.” says Todd, “It is a place I go to enjoy life, clear my mind, and to cleanse my soul. Fly fishing simply balances my life.” Often, Todd finds himself fishing from dawn to dusk.
